China National BlueStar (Group) Co, Ltd completed the acquisition of Adisseo France S.A.S in Brussels, Belgium on January 17, 2006. The acquisition was the first overseas acquisition in China's chemical industry and China's biggest in France.
Adisseo France S.A.S, a well-known supplier of nutritional additives for animals, owns five major plants globally and operates in 140 countries and regions with sales revenue worth over 5 billion yuan in 2005. It is the only manufacturer of both solid and liquid methionine products, with 792 patents and the world's most advanced methionine production technology. In 2004, Adisseo France S.A.S became the world's second biggest manufacturer of methionine with 29% global market share.
China National BlueStar (Group) Co, Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ChemChina, was founded as China's first specialized cleaning company in Lanzhou by Ren Jianxin, President of ChemChina. It has now developed into a chemical company focused on new chemical materials. In 2005, BlueStar's total assets were over 24 billion yuan and its sales revenue reached 23.5 billion yuan.
As a major nutritional additive for animals widely used in China, the market demand of methionine has increased annually by 10%-15%. However, for a long period China could not manufacture its own methionine because of the lack of mature technology.
The State Development Bank reportedly provided most of the fund for the acquisition in the form of a finance loan, considering it was in accordance with national industrial policies, helping fill in the gap of the methionine and enzyme industries.
